Our Heritage

From humble acorns, mighty oaks grow, they say. Our origins can be traced right back to the 1850’s with the establishment of a wholesale business in the North East of Ireland. In 1902 Charles McCann (Grandfather of Carl McCann, current Chairman of Total Produce) established a green grocer’s shop at Number 29 Clanbrassil Street, Dundalk before his son, Neil later took the helm of the family business, then called “McCann’s Fruit” in 1954. Neil McCann had a simple philosophy. He believed that the customer could best be served by smaller importers and wholesalers coming together to pool collective strengths, resources and buying power to deliver a superior service. It’s a philosophy we still believe in today.

In 1956, “McCann Fruit” joined with other prominent fruit importers and wholesalers to form United Fruit Importers and later Fruit Importers of Ireland (FII). Sustained growth followed with FII ultimately becoming the country’s largest fresh produce provider. In 1986, FII acquired Fyffes in the UK, assuming its name and began to expand across continental Europe and beyond.

With the separation of Fyffes’ banana and general produce divisions in 2007, Total Produce was born. Since then, we have continued to grow with respected fresh produce businesses from the UK,
The Netherlands and North America joining our family. Today we are the largest fresh produce provider in Europe.
